The AGM-28 Hound Dog was an American cruise-class air-to-surface missile capable of carrying nuclear warheads. The flight of his prototype took place in 1957/1958, and the missile was put into service in 1960. The mass of the missile was approximately 4,600 kilograms, its length was 12.95 meters, with a diameter of 0.71 meters. The propulsion was provided by a single Pratt and Whitney J-52-P-3o turbojet engine with a thrust of 33 kN. The missile's operational range was approximately 1,260 kilometers.
Design work on the AGM-28 Hound Dog began in the mid-1950s, and North American Aviation was the main contractor and later the main producer. The work was commissioned by the US Air Force, which aimed to replace the less successful GAM-63 Rascall missile, and at the same time wanted to significantly increase the combat potential of their Boeing B-52 strategic bombers. Finally, after a relatively short period of research and development work, a missile was created that meets the vast majority of the USAF's postulates. It is worth adding that the AGM-28 Hound Dog remained in the line until 1975, and its main (though not the only!) Carriers in the service were the B-52G and B-52H bombers.
