LANTIRN (full name: Low Altitude Navigation and Targeting Infrared for Night) is a modern American air navigation and targeting system. Work on this system started in 1980, and its first flight tests started in 1984. Three years later (1987), the system entered service with the USAF. The system consists of two integrated containers, the length of which is 1.99 and 2.51 meters. However, their diameter is 30.5 and 38 centimeters. Their total weight is approx. 450 kilograms.
LANTIRN was developed for the needs of the US Air Force (USAF) by Martin Marietta, which is now part of Lockheed Martin. The system is dedicated to carrying out assault tasks and low-altitude targets at a relatively high speed of the carrier aircraft. Its main task is to enable low-altitude flight, avoiding all types of terrain obstacles, as well as tracking and guiding the armament of the carrier aircraft in all weather conditions, both during the day and at night. The system essentially consists of two containers: AN / AAQ-13 (for navigation) and AN / AAQ-14 (for locating and targeting). The first container also has a built-in AN / APN-237A TFR radar, which allows for very accurate reconstruction of the terrain. The system is installed on Boeing F-15E Strike Eagle, General Dynamics F-16 C / D Fighting Falcon aircraft and was used on Grumman F-14 Tomcat.
