Britons (lat. Brittones ) is a term for the Celtic people living in Great Britain (the area of today's England and Wales and southern Scotland) in the ancient era. There are many indications that this people was created as a result of the merger of the Celtic population flowing into Britain from around 400 BC, with the indigenous people composed of Picts, which quickly underwent the process of Latinization, i.e. the adoption of Celtic culture. In the period of the 1st and 2nd centuries AD, Britain and the Britons were subjugated by the Roman Empire and underwent to some extent the process of Romanization, but retaining many elements of their own culture. It is worth adding that a large part of Britain was conquered in the 5th and 6th centuries AD by the Germanic tribes of the Angles, Saxons and Jutes. The military character of the British in the period from the 1st century BC to the 1st-2nd century AD to a large extent resembled that of the Celts from continental Europe. The most numerous element of their troops was infantry, with which, however, also war chariots, and perhaps cavalry, also played a significant role. The infantry was armed mainly with javelins, spears and very good quality iron swords. Shields and helmets were primarily used as defensive weapons. It is worth adding that in the 60-61 AD, the Britons (more precisely, the "British" tribes of the Icen and Trinobants) were led by Queen Boudica to an uprising against Rome, which, however, ended in total defeat at the Battle of Watling Street in AD 60.
