The Ducati 996 is an Italian sports and racing motorcycle that was first presented to the public in 1999. Its serial production started at the same time and continued until 2002.

The 996 model was developed and put into production in order to strengthen the company's position in the sports motorcycle segment, as well as to replace the very successful 916 model in the commercial offer and on the racetracks. more displacement (996 cc), new fuel injection, slightly more torque, but with almost the same maximum power. Ducati 996 also had an improved brake system and a marginally modernized exhaust system. Two development versions of the motorcycle were created: the Ducati 996 SPS with a reduced curb weight and thus better performance, and the 996 R with a completely changed suspension system, a frame made of composites and a new 998 cm3 power unit.
