The SS Normandie was a French passenger ship, an ocean liner from the interwar period and World War II. The launch took place in 1932, and the unit was put into operation in 1935. The total length was 314 meters and the width was 36 meters. The maximum speed was around 35 knots, and the crew was up to 1,320 people.
The SS Normandie was built at the Saint-Nazaire shipyard in France to operate the Le Havre-New York sea connection. The unit was characterized by a very modern design and the use of many technical innovations of that time, such as the use of electric transmissions in the drive system. What's more - all maneuvers in the gym were highly automated at that time. The ship's architecture also kept up with the times and is perceived by many as one of the most aesthetic ones used on ocean liners in the 20th century! The vessel also offered a very high comfort of travel and turned out to be one of the fastest ships in its class, winning the Blue Ribbon of the Atlantic five times in the years 1935-1937. In the period 1935-1939 the unit made regular cruises on the Le Havre-New York route, but in September 1939 it was detained in the New York port by the American authorities, and in December 1941 - the unit was confiscated by the USA. Unfortunately, in February 1942, a great fire broke out on the SS Normandy, as a result of which the ship capsized. Ultimately, the unit - under the name Lafayette - was cut for scrap in 1948.
