The SS Hope (originally named USS Consolation) was an American Cold War hospital ship. Completion of the unit took place in 1944, and admission to service in the US Navy took place in May 1945. The length of the vessel at the time of launching was 160 m and a width of 21.8 meters. Full displacement did not exceed 15,000 tons and the maximum speed did not exceed 18 knots. The unit had no on-board armament.
USS Consolation was built at the Sun Shipbuilding and Dry Dock Company in Chester, Pennsylvania. The unit took part in the final stage of the Pacific War and served very actively during the Korean War (1950-1953). The USS Consolation has been awarded several awards for its participation in this conflict. In December 1955, the unit was withdrawn from service in the US Navy, and in 1958 it was renamed the SS Hope and, while still serving as a hospital unit, took part in the so-called The HOPE project. The aim of this project was to provide medical aid, medical care, but also to train local personnel in post-colonial and third world countries. In the period from 1960 to 1974, SS Hope made 11 voyages to such countries as South Vietnam, Tunisia, Guinea and Peru. The unit was decommissioned in 1974.
