The Jelcz 317 is a Polish two-axle tractor unit, belonging to the Jelcz 300 truck family. The first prototypes of this family were made at the turn of 1966-1967, and their serial production was carried out in 1968-1992 and took place at Zakłady Samochodowe Jelcz.

The Jelcz 317 was developed on the basis of the successful Jelcz 315 truck. In relation to its predecessor, it differed primarily from the shortened rear part of the frame, which was adapted to towing semi-trailers. The pneumatic and braking systems were also thoroughly improved. Theoretically, the Jelcz 317 could tow a semi-trailer weighing 22 tons, but in practice this result was exceeded and in the course of operation the cars often cooperated with semi-trailers with a total weight of up to 36 tons! It is also worth noting that a lot of emphasis has been placed on the comfort of the driver and the damping of vibrations transmitted to his seat. The solutions used for this purpose turned out to be very successful - better than, for example, in the then Volvo models. The downsides of the vehicle, however, were relatively high noise levels in the driver's cabin, insufficient heating and too weak headlights. Despite these disadvantages, the Jelcz 317 was recognized as one of the best tractor units in its class in Central and Eastern Europe.
