The Kamow Ka-27 (NATO code: Helix) was and still is a Soviet-made, all-metal, on-board, marine helicopter with a fixed, four-support undercarriage in a rare coaxial twin-rotor system. The drive is provided by two Izotow TV-3-117V turbine engines with a power of 2225 KM each. The flight of the first prototype took place in December 1974, and serial production started in 1981 and is still ongoing at Kumiertauskie Zakłady Lotnicze. The Kamow Ka-27 was created as a very far-reaching development of the Ka-25 helicopter. First of all, the engines were changed to much more powerful ones and the shape of the hull was changed (it was definitely strengthened), with particular emphasis on its front part. Several upgrades of the basic version (Ka-27) were created. The first chronologically was the version of the Ka-27PŁ, which was designed to detect and destroy submarines. Later, the Ka-27PS, which was a search and rescue machine, was developed. An export version (Ka-28) and a civil version (Ka-32) were also created. The very successful Ka-27 was exported to several countries, including Bulgaria, Syria, India and South Korea. Its high quality is proved by the fact that India - already equipped with the American SH-3 Sea King - has ordered the Ka-27 for its fleet.
