Le Chebec, or szebek or szebeka, is a type of rowing-sailing ship, very popular in the Mediterranean from the 17th century to the beginning of the 19th century. Shebeka had three masts with Latin sails and initially used 40-42 pairs of oars, but over the centuries this number was reduced to 9-12 pairs. Units of this type usually had about 20-30 on-board guns. They were also characterized by fantastic maneuverability and maneuverability, they were also very fast, and thanks to the oars they could move regardless of the wind. Most often they operated relatively close to the ports due to the fact that only small supplies could be taken on board. Szebeki gained considerable popularity among pirates and privateers, and in the 18th century attempts were made to introduce units of this type into the French navy.
