The Allison V-1710 was an American interwar and WWII aero engine manufactured by Allison Engine Company. It was first tested in flight in 1930. The engine weighs 634 kilograms with a displacement of 28 liters. It is estimated that over 70,000 units of this aircraft engine were produced - primarily during the Second World War.

The Allison V-1710 was a V12 12 cylinder, liquid cooled engine. It turned out to be the first aircraft engine built in the USA to exceed 1000 HP. Undoubtedly, it was a good design with a good power-weight ratio, high reliability and compactness of the entire unit, but it had one major drawback - no turbocharger. Due to this fact, airplanes powered by it at high altitudes lost a lot of maximum power. This led to the licensing of Rolls-Royce Merlin engines in the United States. It was only in later versions of this engine that this drawback was eliminated. Allison V-1710 was constantly improved and in subsequent versions it achieved higher and higher maximum powers, for example: V-1710-A had 1070 HP, V-1710-D - 1250 HP, and in the V-1710-G version it reached 2000 HP. ! The Allison V-1710 engine served as a power unit for many American aircraft during the Second World War. It powered such machines as, for example: Lockheed P-38 Lightning, Bell P-39 Aircobra, Curtiss P-40 Warhawk or early versions of the P-51 Mustang.
