The present-day Hluboká chateau was originally a medieval chateau in the southern part of Bohemia, near the present-day town of České Budějovice. It was erected in the second half of the 13th century in the Gothic style. The building was rebuilt several times in the course of its history - both in the Renaissance and later Baroque spirit. However, the present form, the palace took on the nineteenth century, when it was on the initiative Johann Adolf (II) von Schwarzenberg was rebuilt in the neo-gothic style. It is worth adding that it was quite clearly modeled on similar buildings erected or rebuilt in Great Britain at that time - especially the Palace in Windsor. The Schwarzenberg family lived in this magnificent palace until 1939, when many of its members left the then Czechoslovakia for fear of German repressions. The building was first taken over by the Gestapo, and after 1945 - by the government of already communist Czechoslovakia. Currently, the facility is open to visitors.
