Japanese naval cannon 15.5 cm / 60 3rd Year Type caliber 155 mm (Japanese: 60 kōkei sannenshiki 15.5 centi sanrensōhō) was developed in the first half of the 1930s, and entered service in 1941. The initial velocity of the shell fired from this gun was up to 925 m / s. The cannon was able to fire a projectile with a total mass of up to approx. 56 kilograms over a maximum distance of approx. 27,500 meters. It is worth adding that the barrel length of this gun was 60 calibers, i.e. 9.3 meters.
Japanese naval cannon 15.5 cm / 60 3rd Year Type They were secondary armaments on Yamato-class battleships, where they were mounted in three-gun turrets, as well as the primary armament of the Mogami-class heavy cruisers (until retrofitted with 203mm guns) and the Oyodo-class light cruisers. Cannons of this type were also placed as coastal artillery. Theoretically, it was assumed that guns of this type would be cheap against air targets, but due to the relatively slow horizontal rotation of the gun turret and the insufficient vertical elevation angle of the barrel, they turned out to be of little use as an anti-aircraft weapon. Without a doubt, the 15.5 cm / 60 3rd Year Type cannon was a great anti-surface gun with very good ballistic parameters.
