The Soviet T-28 was among the world's first medium tanks. The prototype was completed in 1931 and production began in late 1932. It was an infantry-support tank intended to break through fortified defences. The T-28 was designed to complement the heavier T-35, with which it shared many components. The type would not have that much success in combat, but it played an important role as a development project for the Soviet designers. A series of new ideas and solutions were tried out on the T-28 and were later incorporated in future models.

The T-28 is a Soviet, multi-turret medium tank from the interwar period and World War II. The first prototypes of this vehicle were made in 1931-1932, and the car entered service in 1933. About 500 vehicles of this type were created in the course of production. The combat weight of the tank was up to 28 tons. The drive was provided by a single, 12-cylinder carburettor engine with a power of up to 500 HP. The main armament consisted of a single 76.2 mm KT-28 gun and 4-5 7.62 mm DT machineguns.
The concept of creating the T-28 was born in the late 1920s, when the Red Army wanted to acquire a completely new and possibly most modern medium tank. The new car, like the T-35, was conceptually quite clearly modeled on the British Vickers A1E1 Independent. It was also supposed to complement the heavier T-35 in the line. In the course of serial production, several prototypes and development versions of the T-28 tank were created, among which it can be indicated among others: T-28A (version with improved gearbox and improved maximum speed), IT-28 (prototype of a bridge tank) or SU-8 (design of a self-propelled gun). The T-28 vehicles were used in combat during the aggression against Poland in September 1939, during the Winter War (1939-1940), and - to a lesser extent - during the war with Japan in 1939-1940. They were also used in the initial phase of the German-Soviet war in 1941, where, however, they suffered significant losses.
