USS Tarawa (LHA-1) is an American large amphibious assault ship with classic propulsion. The keel for this unit was laid in 1971, the launch took place in December 1973, and commissioning took place in May 1976. The ship was 250 meters long, 31 meters wide, and had a displacement of about 39,000 tons. The maximum speed did not exceed 24 knots. The unit was armed with, among others, two anti-aircraft missile launchers or two 20 mm Vulcan Phalanx sets. Aviation equipment consisted of a maximum of 43 aircraft. The USS Tarawa was the lead ship of the landing craft class of the same name. Tarawa-class ships were built to supplement and later replace Iwo Jima-class ships. New units built in such a way as to be able to handle the landing operations of the US Marine Corps by various means of transport: helicopters, amphibians or amphibious barges. It was also assumed that the Tarawa-class ships would operate as part of larger fleet teams. Despite the emphasis on the lowest possible production costs, the cost of a single unit has increased from the planned $ 160 million to about $ 300 million. The ship was decommissioned at the beginning of the 21st century - in 2009.
