The Rolls-Royce Gem is a British turbo-shaft engine from the Cold War and modern times. Its first successful start-up took place in the early 1970s, and serial production started in 1976. Over 1,100 engines of this type of various versions were created in its course. The main manufacturer of these engines is the factories Rolls-Royce Corporation. In the Gem 42 version, the engine is 1.09 meters long with a diameter of 0.59 meters. The dry mass of this type of engine does not exceed 187 kilograms. The engine in this version is able to generate a maximum power of 1000 HP. The presented engine was developed specifically for the Westland Lynx helicopter, but initially the design work was carried out by de Havilland, then Bristol Siddeley, and in 1966 the rights to this power unit were bought by Rolls-Royce. Finally, when it was put into production, the Gem engine had an unusual design for a turbo-shaft engine from that period, containing a low-pressure, four-stage axial compressor, cooperating with two more turbines and a centrifugal compressor. However, the presented engine, despite this design, showed high reliability and functionality during the service, and turned out to be an efficient source of propulsion for Lynx machines. It is worth adding that the Rolls-Royce Gem engine was used primarily on Westland Lynx machines, but also on Agusta A129 Mangusta machines.
